A Cowboy Cow Pasture Golf Association Sanctioned Event
In Association With
HOLBROOKS OLD WEST DAYS
August 17-18, 2001
The lure of the cowboysheritage brings travelers to the Southwest to experience first hand the oldwest. Holbrook, Arizona celebrates its western heritage at its "Old WestDays." This year Cowboy Golf on the Range Tournament comes to "OldWest Days" August 17-18, 2001.
This event brings allthose "cowboys" and not so serious "golfers" together forsome good old family FUN!! Our first annual event will be held at TheJeffers Ranch located just north of downtown Holbrook. Jeffers cows have beenmowing greens and fertilizing fairways just for you!
Holbrook is located innorthern Arizona on I-40 100 miles east of Flagstaff, Arizona and 90 miles westof Gallup, New Mexico.
Russell Houston, anEagar, Arizona artist, inadvertently became its sire when he saw a photo ofcowboys playing golf in an old magazine. He developed a series of oil paintingson the subject; cowboys hitting golf balls off rock and cliff overhangs. RoxanneKnight, cowboy golf promoter said "they aint much to it, you just swinghard, holler shucks and hope you can find yer ball."
In this unique golftournament, your caddy is a horse, the green keepers are cows, and one of theholes is eight feet in diameter. About the caddy, the four-legged golf cart or aprairie schooner for those accustomed to a more traditional golf cart. Allcowboy golfers carry three clubs stowed in the leg of a pair of blue jeans cutoff and sewn shut on one end. The greens are exceptionally tough, its cow grass, some of it six inches high with a little sage brush for good measure. "Thismaybe the only course in the world," says cowboy golf enthusiast SherriHill, "where golfers can declare a lost ball while putting!""Cows dont know the difference between greens and fairways, and theytrample both areas with equal enthusiasm, leaving cow pies to attract anytype of boot!"
To atone for the hazards, the course designers make holes substantially larger by sinking coffee cans intothe ground and marking them with tree branches and plastic irrigation pipe. Ofcourse there are prizes and the night before the big tournament, your taste budswill savor an old fashion western bar-b-que. After dinner experience real cowboyentertainment that tickles your funny bone.
